Happy New Year! Here are 11 of my favorite songs that i produced last year and the stories behind them. Enjoy!

=War Paint=

This beat was made before “The Long Way Home” was finished. Kris heard it and we decided to hold it for the next project. Just like “The Long Way Home” he killed it and I had to go back and change some things in the instrumental to make it more epic.

Bad Dreams

We started this song in ‘09 and it’s seen a few different forms. It started as a electronic minimalistic track but one day we were finishing a session and I started screwing around on a keyboard and came up with that ending organ riff and drum part. Jade and JD Carmelli worked on it more and got Manny Laine to do the drums over. When she did that “Eeeeeeeeeyyaa” I got goosebumps.

Fucked Up Remix

The original always got a lot of love so we had to do a remix of this. Kris had worked with 10 for years and at the time we had just got put onto Jarv’s music through Blue and we were both digging it. 10 killed those laughs. Totally set the mood.

Me Vs. The Machine f. Ibe

Had a really rough skeleton of this beat, sent it to a couple people and Chris is the only one was feeling it. Went over to his crib on day and wrote the hook. He wanted the music to change every verse so he came over with Jay and we switched it up. Chris caught a lot of bodies on this. Great take on the industry.

Oh Lord

Accident. Made this 3 beats this day and meant to send Kris a different one and this ended up in his inbox. Realized it when I got to my gig and I sent him an email along the lines of “my bad meant to send you something different” and he was like “Noooo this is the one.” Had a the main horn line and Blue knew a guy that could lay down the part and embellish. When we were finishing up the song, Kris wanted to have louder claps at the end so Me, Kris, Maxwell Osbourne and Dan Policar (who also bodies the organs at the end) added em. That 2nd verse, OH LORD.

Genesis

Perfect intro for Faust. He wanted something grand yet basic remain simple. Transitions him well from “Comic Books Unlimited” to Faust. Lot of gems in this one. We basically just let D-rock solo on guitar the whole song. Dan Policar did the intro and outro.

Hometown

So V.I. owns the studio we record at and had been asking me for a beat since the end of “The Long Way Home”. I played him one beat, didn’t like it. Sent him another and he liked it but ended up not using it. This was third but I knew I had to play this in person so he could get the idea of it. I had a hook but he just flipped it to fit his style more. V.I. and Blue that’s family.

As You Like It

“Me and Ibe stay argued…” True story. Chris and I had been disagreeing on the direction and technicalities of the project and it almost got to a point where I was willing to walk and leave things the way the were. He calls me one day and we get into a heated argument and eventually squash it. I made this when I got off the phone and he had this beat an hour later. Also the first time Rocki Evans got on one of my tracks.

Just Anotha Day

We were nearing the end of “War Paint” and TC (Kris’ manager) was telling us we didn’t have that ignorant song. We agreed, Kris came over one day and I made this beat and we wrote the hook in probably 15min. Light.

Revelations

We had another song called “Revelations” but it was airy and too hopeful sounding. Chris wanted something hard. He came over with the intentions of cooking but I made this while he was on his way. His friend dropped him off and was looking for parking. By the time she buzzed he was walking out the door with it. Don’t think she was too happy…

Sleep When I’m Dead

This song means a lot to me and with those verses I’m guessing the same for Kris. Both of us were in a place in our lives where we felt people close to us were depending on us too much but we couldn’t say a word. I had the last two lines of the chorus, called Marcus to come over and help write but by the time he came over, I had finished writing it. I knew from the start he was the only one that could sing this. Luckily he was with it.
